Johns Island Days 1&2

We are two days into Johns Island! We have begun work on homes across Johns Island and the surrounding areas, and there are already visible changes to each of the homes we are working on!
We arrived yesterday afternoon and began introductions to the Home Works program and the other churches joining us at Johns Island for the week. We heard from Cliff Moore, leading the Home Works session, about our goal here this week: to love God and serve our neighbor. We broke into work teams, about 15 students per team, split among churches, and constructed and decorated bird houses to give to the homeowners we will be serving this week. After a delicious meal and more than a few games of ping pong, we ended the day in prayer.
Today began early, with a 6am wake up song (to “Shout!”), followed by morning prayer and breakfast. We left for each team’s individual work sites at 8, and were ready for a full day of work. While no two homes are the same, teams are working on projects like renovating a bathroom, repairing water damaged floors, upgrading porches for mobility-restricted homeowners, and patching roofs. Each group began their day by meeting the homeowner and praying with him/her before getting to work. So far, we have been SO impressed with the work ethic and general skills of these students! They have been so willing to step up to complete difficult tasks, and are always looking for work to do.
We returned from our job sites this evening and were treated to a true southern feast by a local church group (after a MUCH needed break time for showers). We broke back into our work groups for evening devotions, and students had time to read and discuss Galatians 2, and ponder what their true identity is. (Hint: the answer we are working toward here is Christ). As we wind down our day and move into our second full day on the work sites, we can’t wait to see how much closer each student will move toward each other and Christ. Keep checking out the blog for daily updates, and thank you for your prayers over our group as we continue to serve our neighbor here in Johns Island!
